Many years before Karen got into bodywork, she rode horses and managed horse barns mostly in Northern Virginia, the heart of horse country. During her years there, she rode along side of and trained with some of the more acclaimed horse men and women in the world. There she competed in 3 Day Eventing, then specialized in dressage and competed into the FEI levels.
On a whim, when asked by her neighbor who was Master of the Middleburg Hunt, she helped leg up her fox hunters. As a trained dressage rider, she took the job thinking she would only last a few weeks. Four years later, Karen had realized that her many years of training only touched the surface of how to get along with a horse when you need to ride them for 3 or 4 hours at a time. During this time she began to appreciate the simplicity and naturalness of the way of the horse.
Many years later, during Karen’s first CranioSacral class while chatting with her instructor, her instructor mentioned that people were practicing CST with horses. Karen had, what she calls, her ‘moment of inspiration’ and her career applying CranioSacral Therapy to treat horses began.
Karen’s practice now consists of treating people and horses and the occasional dog or cat. As to which she enjoys more, it’s usually the one she is working on at that moment.
“What the horses teach me, I bring to the people. And what the people teach me, I bring to the horses. It’s such a nice blend. I can’t imagine not doing both!”
